The Maison des Canuts invites you to discover five centuries of Lyon’s silk industry well-known for its technical, social and creative prestige. Our website has been completely updated and expanded. Go on a guided tour and discover Jacquard’s invention through weaving demonstrations on hand looms, silkworms’ lifecycle, the Canuts social influence during the 19th century and today’s reality in Rhône-Alpes textile industry.
Located at 10-12 rue d’Ivry, this establishment created by the COOPTISS (a weaving cooperative founded by Lucie Berger in 1960) opened in 1970. At the end of the 19th century, this historic place was the head office of the Syndicat des Ouvriers Tisseurs et Similaires (Weavers and other similar professions trade union). Situated at the heart of the Canuts (silkworkers) district, you are entering a heritage interpretation centre that reveals Lyon’s silk industry great adventure: five centuries of social, architectural and technical progress. First region of France in the textile industry and artistic fabrics competitive cluster, Rhône-Alpes deserves an outstanding position in this prestigious past.
