It belongs to the Sintra cultural landscape which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. The palace’s long history is intertwined with the fate of the Portuguese ruling nobility who resided here from the early 15th to the late 19th century, making it the most populated royal palace in Portugal.
The extensive palace complex consists of a conglomerate of different architectural styles. The 33-metre high conical chimneys that rise above the palace kitchen define its unmistakable silhouette.
