Museo Nacional de Arte Romano

The Museum offers a glimpse into life in one of the largest Roman colonies in Hispania, Emerita Augusta, which was one of the most important cities in Lusitania and eventually became the capital of Hispania.

The Museum houses the artefacts found in the archaeological site of Mérida, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The building housing the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano was designed by Rafael Moneo and is a benchmark in contemporary museum architecture. Iconic pieces such as mosaics, sculptures, plaques and documents on the Roman culture provide an insight into everyday life in the colony of Emerita Augusta, which was founded by Augustus after one of the episodes of the Cantabrian Wars, and is one of the greatest examples of the romanisation of Hispania
