Modern Art Oxford is a leading UK contemporary art space with an international reputation for inspirational and innovative programmes. The gallery is located in central Oxford and provides free entry for all.

Modern Art Oxford has been presenting inspiring exhibitions of contemporary art for almost 50 years.

The Museum of Modern Art Oxford was founded by the architect Trevor Green in 1966. Its primary aim was ‘the advancement of education of the general public in the modern visual arts’. In September of 1966, the Museum of Modern Art moved to a new home in the old brewery building on Pembroke Street, where we have been ever since.

In 2002, we changed our name to Modern Art Oxford, a change that better reflected a vibrant, changing programme of temporary exhibitions, rather than a museum that housed a collection of artworks.

Today, Modern Art Oxford is internationally recognised as one of the UK’s leading centres of contemporary art. Over the last fifty years, we have worked with some of the most influential figures in the contemporary art world, including artists, exhibition organisers and directors. The gallery is known for its distinctive and often ground-breaking exhibitions programme which has included projects by Richard Long (1971), Sol Le Witt (1973), Joseph Beuys (1974), Donald Judd (1995), Marina Abramovic (1995), Carl Andre (1997), Yoko Ono (1997), Tracey Emin (2002), Jim Lambie (2003), Mike Nelson (2004), Jannis Kounellis (2004), Daniel Buren (2006), Gary Hume (2008), Howard Hodgkin (2010), Thomas Houseago (2010), Graham Sutherland (2011), Jenny Saville (2012), Stephen Willats (2013), Eva Kotatkova (2013), Barbara Kruger (2014), and Stuart Brisley (2014).

Directors of Modern Art Oxford have included Peter Ibsen (1970-1973), Nicholas Serota (1973-1976), David Elliot (1976-1996), Kerry Brougher (1996-2000), Andrew Nairne (2000-2009), and Michael Stanley (2009-2012).

Founded in 1966, Modern Art Oxford is one of the UK’s most exciting and influential contemporary art spaces with an international reputation for ambitious and innovative projects.

The gallery is open to all and all our exhibitions and events are completely free of charge, unless stated.

We aim to make contemporary art accessible and engaging to the widest audience through presentation and participation.

The programme celebrates the relevance of contemporary visual culture to society today. Our agenda is shaped by a belief in dialogue between contemporary art and ideas, and seek to create new relationships between artists and audiences at the beginning of the 21st century.

ACCESSIBILITY

Access for disabled guests is via Pembroke St, and the nearest available parking is at The Westgate Centre however, this will be closed from midnight on Monday 5 January 2015 until 2017. There is an alternative temporary car park at Oxpens. For more on parking in Oxford see:

HOW TO REACH

Modern Art Oxford is located in the heart of Oxford city centre, five minutes walk from the central Gloucester Green Bus Station and 10 minutes walk from Oxford's mainline rail station. Direct trains run from London Paddington to Oxford every 30 minutes.
