National Palace of Sintra

Situated in the town’s historic centre, the National Palace of Sintra is a unique monument, distinguished by its outstanding historical, architectural and artistic value.

Of all the Palaces that the Portuguese monarchs had erected throughout the Middle Ages, only Sintra has survived practically intact, maintaining the essence of its configuration and silhouette since the mid-16th century. The main work campaigns after the Christian Reconquest (12th century) were promoted by the kings D. Dinis, D. João I and D. Manuel I, between the end of the 13th century and the middle of the 16th century. These adaptation, expansion and improvement works determined the physiognomy of the palace.

ACCESSIBILITY

The National Palace of Sintra may be visited by people with reduced mobility in 40% of the total visiting circuit, that is, is possible to access several museological spaces that include the Royal Kitchen, Manueline Room, Queen Maria Pia's Rooms, Halberdiers Room, Swans Room, Central Courtyard, Lion's Patio, Preta's Garden, shop and cafeteria.

In order to access the Palace, it is necessary to enter through the Royal Kitchen since the main entrance, due to its architectural features, has several levels of consecutive stairs. To access the kitchen, an electric traction equipment is available, which will improve the mobility of the manual wheelchairs, overcoming the inclination and the uneven pavement of the route. Inside the Palace, permanent ramps and stair-climbing equipment, are also available, which allow to assure the best safety conditions and allow circulation in part of its interior. The exit from the monument is also made with the stair climber equipment.

Inside the Palace, a tactile model of the monument is available.
