„Brutal but sexy“ – Kunsthalle Wien is Vienna’s exhibition space for international contemporary art and discourse. At its two venues at MuseumsQuartier and Karlsplatz, it presents contemporary artistic perspectives that increase the awareness of current issues. Kunsthalle Wien views itself as a place of confrontation, experimentation, ongoing action and change – a place where the things that really matter to us today are on the agenda.
Kunsthalle Wien sees itself as the basis for a wide array of art forms that comprises well-known approaches to contemporary art as well as those which are yet to be discovered. It views itself as a forum that attributes equal importance to the presentation of art and the reflection of art and culture. Aware of the significance of contemporary art today, Kunsthalle Wien develops innovative exhibition formats which correspond to the large diversity of artistic media.
Since it opened in 1992 – originally as a makeshift structure shaped like a container, today with locations at the Museumsquartier and Karlsplatz – Kunsthalle Wien, as an urban institution, presents national and international contemporary art. In this respect, it is both a location for established art and negotiation site for current societal issues as well as future developments.
Kunsthalle Wien provides a space for experiments and artistic diversity. As an institution without its own collection, it focuses on themed group exhibitions, solo presentations of international artists as well as exhibitions of artists who are yet to be discovered. It therefore has an exceptional position among Viennese cultural institutions. Additionally, three different exhibition halls with individual interior profiles provide possibilities for realizing a variety of exhibition concepts.
Contemporary art does not explain itself. Therefore, our art education program, which covers a wide range of topics with innovative concepts, is crucial to our work at Kunsthalle Wien. We aim to provide access to presentations on a variety of levels, to facilitate a consolidation of artistic practices and their theoretical reflection, and to assist in an in-depth examination of current issues.
