Basel Town Hall was built in the first decades of the 16thcentury in the late Burgundian Gothic style. Between 1606 and 1608, the Main Office was annexed to the north, built imitating the Gothic style of the original building.
In the first decades of the 19thcentury, after the entry of Basel into the Swiss Confederation, the town hall underwent to conservation and restoration works. At that time, elements of Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance style were added to the building. Besides, most recently, the current façade has been restored to recreate its original appearance. At present, the Town Hall houses the meetings of the Cantonal Parliament as well as the Cantonal Government of the canton of Basel-Stadt.
