"Moscow City Galleries" Network is an association of 19 modern exhibition platforms, working with different types and genres of traditional and contemporary art.

"Moscow City Galleries" Network is an association of 19 modern exhibition platforms, working with different types and genres of traditional and contemporary art.

Exhibition halls appeared in the 1980's to "work with the population in the sphere of culture". Thus they were created not centrally, but at the discretion of each district chief. In many cases the halls have become a kind of district "houses of culture" as a result.

However, this autonomy had a positive aspects. There were a lot of painters, graphic artists, sculptors, who were not included in the closed system of artists' unions. So, they were able to display their works in the exhibition halls. This is how the shocking underground actions, conceptual exhibitions of avant-garde artists and the first steps of now famous artists turned out to be in the stories of some halls.

Now most part of Moscow halls belongs to the Network, the main goals of which are to bring art beyond the Garden Ring and to raise the level of culture in the residential areas of the city.
