Benjamin Franklin House at 36 Craven Street in the heart of London is a heritage 'gem' and the world's only remaining home of Benjamin Franklin.
The world’s only remaining home of Benjamin Franklin opened to the public for the first time on Franklin’s 300th birthday, as a dynamic museum and educational facility.
Located on Craven Street, just a short walk from Trafalgar Square, this historical building dates from circa 1730 and was the residence of Benjamin Franklin in London between 1757 and 1775, during which time this extraordinary man was involved with mediation between America and Britain as well as continuing his groundbreaking scientific studies.
Visitors to the house can see the ‘Historical Experience’, where the eighteenth century spaces serve as a stage for drama that seamlessly blends live interpretation and cutting edge sound, lighting, and visual projection to tell the rich story of Franklin in London.
The Architectural Tour explores the Georgian features of the House, along with its fascinating history encompassing Franklin’s long residence, the Hewson anatomy school, and the comprehensive conservation project that saved it from dereliction.
The Historical Experience lasts approximately 45 minutes and covers three floors of the 18th century building. Architectural tours last approximately 45 minutes and includes a demonstration of the Glass Armonica.
