Märkisches Museum

The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city in this striking structure on the bank of the Spree River. The permanent exhibition, “BerlinZEIT - compact history”, gives visitors a compact, easy-to-understand picture of the city from the Ice Age to the present within 60 minutes. Easier than ever, visitors will have the opportunity to get glimpses into Stadtmuseum Berlin's collections.

The Märkisches Museum's Laboratory’s comprehensive programme encourages young visitors in particular to experience history hands-on.

You can find the impressive Buillding on the bank of the Spree River. Stroll through the streets and districts of Berlin at our permanent exhibition, “Here is Berlin!”. Experience how Berlin has changed several centuries. Gotische Kapelle, the Zunftsaal and the Waffenhalle provide an atmospheric framework for a range of productions. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Märkisches Provinzialmuseum in 1874. At the Museum Laboratory’s a wide programme encourages young visitors to experience history hands-on.

Distinctive building pays homage to architectural role models

Director of urban planning and construction Ludwig Hoffmann oversaw the building of the Märkisches Museum in Köllnischer Park from 1899 to 1908. A virtuosic, carefully staged ensemble in the style of Wilhelminian Historicism, this structure pays homage to architectural precursors from the north of Germany and the Mark Brandenburg region.
