Het Schip

Het Schip (The Ship) is an apartment building in the Spaarndammerbuurt district ofAmsterdam planned in 1919 by the Dutch architect Michel de Klerk.


The building, designed in the style of the Amsterdam School of Expressionist Architecture, resembles the outlines of a ship, showing an unconventional appearance. It contains 102 homes for the working class, a small meeting hall and a post office, which as of 2001 houses the Museum of the Amsterdam School. Het Schip is listed as Dutch National Monument 3961.

ACCESSIBILITY

Museum The Ship is open Tuesday till Sunday from 11.00 to 17.00.

The museum is accessible by wheelchair.


HOW TO REACH

Car
From A10 Ring Road West take exit S102 towards Westerpark. Follow the Transformatorweg and subsequently (after passing the viaduct) the Spaarndammerdijk. At the traffic lights where you see a BP gas station on the other side of the street take a right into Oostzaanstraat. Take a right into Hembrugstraat, then a left into Zaanstraat and another left for Oostzaanstraat 45.
Alternatively, you can take Houtmankade, Spaardammerstraat, Assendelftstraat and Zaanstraat to Oostzaanstraat 45.

There are sufficient parking facilities around the museum. Please mind the fact that all parking lots in the Spaarndammer-area need to be paid for, as well on Sundays!

Public Transport
From Central Station: take bus 22 towards Sloterdijk Station. Get off at bus stop Spaarndammerstraat and walk ca. 5 minutes via Hembrugstraat to Oostzaanstraat 45. You will see flags in front of the entrance of Museum The Ship.

From Sloterdijk Station: take bus 22 (you will find the bus station downstairs) towards Muiderpoortstation, get off at bus stop Spaarndammerstraat and walk ca. 5 minutes via Hembrugstraat to Oostzaanstraat 45.

By foot
Museum The Ship is ca. half an hour walking distance from Central Station via Haarlemmerstraat/Haarlemmerdijk. Ten minutes walking distance from tramline 3 stop Haarlemmerpoort. On the other side of the tram stop you can transfer to bus 22 towards Sloterdijk Station, get off at bus stop Spaarndammerstraat.
