The building itself is a monument of history and culture.

The Museum of V. A.Tropinin and Moscow artists of his time was opened on February 11, 1971. It was created based on the personal collection of Russian art of the 18-19 centuries and was granted to the city of Moscow together with the building #10 on Schetinensky lane by Felix E. Vishnevsky, a well-known collector, enthusiast and connoisseur of  Russian paintings.

The Museum’s collection has around 3,000 paintings, pieces of graphics and decorative art. Most of the works belong to the first third of the 18th — mid-19th century. The building in which the Museum is located, is itself a monument of history and culture of the second half of the 19th and early 20th century, the example of a merchant building in Zamoskvorechye.

The Museum has one of the most significant collections of works of V.A. Tropinin — the founder of the "Moscow school" of painting, the favorite portraitist of Moscow in the 1st half of the 19th century. The museum's collection also includes the works of the outstanding artists of the that period: I.Ya. Vishnyakova, I.P. Argunov, A.P. Antropov, F.S.  Rokotov, D.G. Levitsky, V.L. Borovikovsky, S.F. Shchedrin, S.S. Shchukin, etc.

A distinctive feature of the Museum of V.A. Tropinin is its intimacy preserving the atmosphere of an old Moscow house. The furniture, vintage chandeliers and lamps, the porcelain, glass, ivory jewellry boxes, beadworks — all these items help the visitors feel the harmony of the bygone times.
