The majestic Parc Jean-Drapeau site is steeped in history: its discovery, development and expansion, the 1967 World's Fair and its Man and His World theme, the 1976 Summer Olympics, the opening of Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve for the staging of the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada, the first festival on the parterre of île Sainte-Hélène, and much more!

The unique parc Jean-Drapeau, renowned for its diverse cultural and sports programming, is the perfect place for family, couples and friends getaways, only 5 minutes from downtown Montreal!

The history of Parc Jean-Drapeau and its notable events

  • EXPO 67: The World Expo of 1967 at Parc Jean-Drapeau welcomed 62 participating nations and over 50 million people who visited numerous pavilions, which had the theme Man and His World.

  • A BEACH IN MONTREAL: In 2015 for the 25th, the Beach of Parc Jean-Drapeau is renamed as a tribute to the mayor of the time who initiated and directed to the project: Jean Doré. But how did this project come about?

  • BIOSPHERE: Before becoming an Environment museum, Buckminster Fuller's Biosphere had several vocations. Discover the story!

  • THE AQUATIC COMPLEX: Previously named the Chalet des Baigneurs, then the Pavillon des Baigneurs, Parc Jean-Drapeau's Aquatic Complex has had various vocations over the years.

  • THE OLYMPIC BASIN & THE MONTREAL OLYMPIC GAMES: Although the name suggests it, many do not know that the Olympic Basin was built to serve the canoe competitions and rowing during the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.

Mission of the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau

The mission of the Société is to administrate, operate, develop, maintain and animate Parc Jean-Drapeau, which includes Sainte-Hélène and Notre-Dame islands in Montréal. In carrying out its mission, the Société oversees the staging of regional and international recreation-tourist activities.

Parc Jean-Drapeau stages many recreation-tourist attractions that make it a unique site in Canada, enhanced by the fact a subway station services the park.

This outstanding park, which was created at the time of the world's fair, Expo 67, attracts sports enthusiasts, young families, culture aficionados, nature lovers and visitors who attend its international events. Its areas of attraction are enlivened by concerts, sports events and major festivals that contribute to its diversity...all this a mere five minutes from downtown Montréal!

The Société du parc Jean-Drapeau is a paramunicipal organization established by the Charte de la Ville de Montréal. In 1999, the Parc des Îles de Montréal was renamed Parc Jean-Drapeau, in honour of the man who was the mayor of Montréal for 30 years (until 1986) and the one who brought the world's fair, Expo67, to the city. In 2005, the Parc's corporate name officially became Société du parc Jean-Drapeau.
