Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame de Neuchâtel

The construction of the Collegiate Churchof Neuchâtel began at the end of the 12thcentury and was completed in the 13thcentury. The building presents several medieval architectonic styles: Rhenish Romanesque, Burgundy style and Gothic.

Towards  the  middle  of  the  19thcentury,  the  architect  Léo  Châtelain  was  commissioned  to  restore  the  church.  At  that  time,  besides,  was  built  the  north  tower,  which  had  not  been  constructed.  Châtelain,  inspired  by  the  works  of  Eugène  Viollet-le-Duc,  proposed  a  restoration  by  adding  elements,  as  the  rosette  on  the  west  façade  or  spires  to  both  towers,  to  give  the  building  a  neo-Gothic  appearance.  The  last  restoration  works  took  place  between  2009  and  2013  and  included  archaeological  excavations  in  the  cloister.
