Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau

The Hospital de Sant Pau i de la Santa Creu began to be built in the early years of the 15th century and the construction works continued until the 18th century, so it presents elements of different styles.

It is divided into three sectors: the Convalescence House and the College of Surgery; a central area with a large cloister patio in the middle; and a set of dependences, including the church of the institution. At the end of the 19th century, the hospital was insufficient due to the growth of the city and population increase, also becoming obsolete due to advances in medicine and hygiene, so it was moved to a new headquarters in the first decades of the 20th century. In 1926, the premises of the Santa Creu i Sant Pau Hospital were acquired by the Barcelona City Council, which initiated the tasks of reconstruction and reconditioning of the spaces. Five years later, in 1931, it was classified as an Artistic Historical Monument of National Interest. Since 1969, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) manages the Convalescence House building, which is currently the headquarters of several institutions linked to the university. The complex was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.

Project date: 15th century
