The Mary Rose

The Mary Rose - Henry VIII's warship, lost in 1545, recovered in 1982 and now on display in a dedicated museum in Portsmouth for everyone to visit all year round.

Explore Henry VIII’s favourite ship, recovered from the seabed in one of the most challenging archaeological excavations of all time. See the thousands of objects, from the large guns and the surgeon's tools to personal items like tankards and nit combs, which recreate life onboard with an authenticity no other attraction can provide.

Whether you’re interested in the lives of the officers, the ordinary sailors, or even the ship’s dog, you don’t just get a window into their lives, The Mary Rose opens a door to the world of 1545.

ACCESSIBILITY

Visually impaired visitors
Information and guides are available in large print formats. Sensory resources are also offered, including tactile plans and painting of the ship. Visitors are also welcome to handle certain artefacts, both historical objects and replicas.
The light levels in the museum are kept low for conservation purposes, so if you have any issues please speak to a member of the team and they will help you with your journey.

Hearing impaired visitors
There is an audio loop system in exhibition spaces. Transcripts and subtitles are also provided for the audio visual content in most areas. All guide and assistance dogs are most welcome.

Claustrophobia
Due to the low light levels in the museum, some visitors with claustrophobia may have issues.
If you have any problems during your visit please speak to a member of the team and they will help you with your journey. Special "Relaxed Opening" mornings, where light levels are increased to improve the are held every month, check the events pages for more details.

The Mary Rose buggy service
The Mary Rose Museum is located 500m (550 yds.) from the entrance to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. If you are unable to walk up the site, the team can come and pick you up in the buggy, provided by Motorculture Ltd, with a grant from the Boshier-Hinton Foundation. Call the Mary Rose on +44 (0)23 9281 2931 to book in advance, or contact the team when you arrive at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

Mobility
The Historic Dockyard site and the museum itself are fully accessible by wheelchair, and the museum houses a wheelchair accessible toilet. Lifts are available to move along the visitor route. A number of wheelchairs is available on site to ensure all areas are accessible.

Disabled Parking
There are fifteen disabled spaces available in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard car park, located in Admiralty Road approximately 400 metres from the dockyard entrance.

Facilities
The museum has a fully accessible toilet with adult changing facilities.

HOW TO REACH

By bus/coach
National and local services stop at The Hard Interchange, two minutes' walk from the Historic Dockyard.

By car, and parking
From the M27, take junction 12 for the 275. Follow the 'Historic Waterfront' signs on the motorway and 'Historic Dockyard' signs in Portsmouth. For parking, the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard car park is situated approximately 400 metres from the main Historic Dockyard entrance. Disabled parking bays are available in the car park. This car park has a height restriction of 2.1 metres (6' 10")

For sat nav devices the car park postcode is PO1 3GW (Admiralty Road).

Alternatively, you can use the Park and Ride facility off the M275.

By ferry
The Gosport ferry and Isle of Wight catamaran are at Portsmouth Harbour Station.

By train
The nearest station is Portsmouth Harbour: a few minutes' walk from the dockyard and only around 90 minutes by rail from London Waterloo.
