Casa Milà (La Pedrera)

Casa Milà, popularly known as ‘La Pedrera’ (the stone quarry), an ironic allusion to the resemblance of its façade to an open quarry, was constructed between 1906 and 1912 by Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926). For its uniqueness, artistic and heritage value have received major recognition and in 1984 was inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List, for its exceptional universal value. Nowadays it is the headquarters of Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation.

A visit to Casa Milà, popularly known as ‘La Pedrera’ (the stone quarry), a building that is a reference point in world architecture, allows you to understand and gain a deep knowledge of the work of Antoni Gaudí and, in particular, his last civil work, La Pedrera.

A visit to La Pedrera by day covers to different museum areas – the Espai Gaudí and the Pedrera Apartment – which, together with the Provença and Passeig de Gràcia Courtyard, the Exhibition Room and the Roof-Terrace, make up the tour of the building. The Espai Gaudí, in the attic, offers a broad view of his work, showing the most basic traits of his clearly visual and empirical way of understanding architecture through models, audiovisuals and objects. The route around the space is divided into seven areas, one of which is devoted entirely to La Pedrera. The Pedrera Apartment recreates the home and life of a Barcelona bourgeois family of the first third of the twentieth century. It is also now possible to visit the former residence of the Milà family, which houses the Temporary Exhibition Room.

Casa Milà is the only Gaudí interpretation centre in Barcelona devoted to providing an understanding of the work of this architectural genius. A total of 4,500 m2 can be visited, spread over five floors. The only areas that cannot be visited are the private homes and offices that remain in the building.

ACCESSIBILITY

Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera offers accessible resources and services in its spaces and amenities.

Casa Milà has a programme called “Accessible La Pedrera”, which has introduced sensory resources, not only in the exhibition areas but also in the contents of the programming of cultural activities such as lectures, seminars and concerts. Resources have been incorporated for the hard of hearing such as interpretation in sign language or the audio descriptions of the events for the partially sighted.

And so Casa Milà has a series of sensory resources whose aim is to make it easier to understand the contents of the exhibitions and to include different audiences.

Visits to the different areas of Casa Milà are also accessible to people using wheelchairs.
