Pickford's House

Hidden amongst the gorgeous old buildings and cobbled pavement of Friar Gate sits Pickford’s House; the professional showcase and family home of Georgian architect Joseph Pickford. Now the museum illustrating aspects of domestic life from the 18th to the 20th centuries, Pickford’s House shows the contrast between the master and the servant, the grandeur of Georgian architecture and the changes that occurred in the house over its 250-year life.

Experience domestic life up close and learn about how the Pickford family and later occupants used each fascinating room. From the lavish dining room to the humble servant’s bedroom, you’re bound to find something that piques your interest.

Although the front of the house may look like the entrance to the museum, the visitor entrance is to the right of the building up a ramp, so that it is accessible for everyone. We open the front door to our visitors for special events.

Given the limiting nature of this historic building, at Pickford’s House wheelchair access is unfortunately only available on the ground floor, lower ground floor and garden; and please be aware that there are no accessible toilets at this site for disabled visitors.
