Design Hub is a new kind of creative environment. It is a community of design researchers for collaborative, inter-disciplinary interaction and education, housed in a purpose-built 10-storey building by Sean Godsell and Peddle Thorp, Architects. Design Hub is open to everyone. It houses a series of spaces dedicated to researching, archiving, exhibiting, discussing and critiquing design in all its phases. Design Hub is also a place to do, learn and talk about design through our programs.
Over ten levels, Design Hub houses the Design Archives, a Virtual Reality Centre, a workshop, Multipurpose Room, Lecture Theatre, and four rooftop Pavilions. Open Warehouses run the length of the building. These are working zones for teams of RMIT and external researchers engaged in projects, many with industry, government and the community. Here they prototype, experiment, read, write, develop, discuss and assess their work. Long Rooms run in parallel, these are the exhibition and display zones for this research. Projects at all stages will be presented here for consideration and debate, along with meetings, workshops and forums.
More than 1700sqm of space at Design Hub is dedicated to exhibitions and display. In addition, an outdoor forecourt that links the Design Hub and the RMIT Design Archives is the home to creative programming.
Formed primarily out of glass, concrete, steel and black rubber, Design Hub is an environmentally smart building. A high-performance skin of 17,000 semi-translucent, sandblasted glass cells deliver energy efficiency and a high quality indoor atmosphere. The building is designed for rainwater and storm water harvesting, it incorporates a grey water treatment facility and a computer-based control system monitoring the building’s mechanical and electrical equipment.
