Hosios Loukas is a monastery founded in the early 10th century by the hermit St. Luke. The complex consists of two churches, the refectory, the bell tower, the cells and other buildings.
The church which dates from the second half of the 10th century, is the oldest building in the complex as well as the oldest example of the cross-in-square type in the country. Next to it was built in the early 11th century the Katholikon, the main church of the monastery. It is adorned in the interior with marble revetment, wall-paintings and mosaics, preserved in very good condition with the exception of the dome, destroyed at the end of the 16th century. In the last decades, it has been carried out several conservation and restoration work on the monument as the reinforcement of the masonry, reparation of the roofs and the restoration of parts of the cells. Hosios Loukas is listed on UNESCO's World Heritage Sites, along with the monasteries of Nea Moni and Daphnion.
