René Magritte House Museum

The René Magritte house museum is placed in the house were the painter lived for 24 years. Beside the apartment faithfully restored with the authentic furniture, a biographical exhibition made of small original works, photographs, letters, personal objects, is displayed on the upper floors. The last floors presents an exhibition of 27 Magritte paintings which were destroyed during the war.

The museum was founded by a belgian collector named André Garitte, who got to know René Magritte’s wife and friends in the 1980ies. In 1994, this collector managed to buy one of Magritte house and make it into a museum. 6 years were necessary to reconstruct the painter’s flat thanks to archives and testimonies. The René Magritte house museum opened in 1999 and was the first museum dedicated to this worldwide famous artist.

The painter’s flat at the esseghemstreet is very valuable for many reasons:

- 800 works were painted in his dining room studio which was the headquarter of the belgian surrealits at weekends

- many element of the house inspired the painter for his works.

- Magritte built in the garden a small advertising agency ‘Studio Dongo’ from where many of his adverstising works were published.

The museum enriched its collection within the years and became a reference for the Magritte lovers. In 2014 an important research around lost Magritte works was accomplished : during 8 years the museum team managed to recreate 27 destroyed works in their original state.
