Dohány Street Synagogue

Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Europe, was built between 1854 and 1859 in the Moorish Revival style according to the plans of the architect Förster. Bombed by the Hungarian pro-Nazi Arrow Cross Party on February 3rd, 1939, the building was also badly damaged from aerial raids during the Nazi Occupation and in the Siege of Budapest, used during that time as a base for a German Radio and as a stable.

In the Communist period, the structure became again a Jewish prayer house. In the 1990s, restoration and renovation works were undertaken with state funds and private donations. At present, Dohány Street Synagogue is part of a complex along with the Heroes' Temple, the graveyard, the Memorial and the Jewish Museum.
