Fashion Museum Bath

The Fashion Museum Bath holds a world-class collection of contemporary and historic dress. The Museum of Costume was opened in the Assembly Rooms on 23 May 1963. It was founded by Doris Langley Moore, a designer, collector, writer and scholar, who gave her famous private collection of costume to the city of Bath.

The Museum of Costume changed its name to the Fashion Museum in summer 2007. The Fashion Museum is owned by Bath and North East Somerset Council and is managed by the Heritage Services section. It is housed in the Assembly Rooms building, which is owned by the National Trust. 

The museum welcomes about 100,000 visitors to the museum each year. The visitors are a mix of tourists, fashion specialists, students and locals.

The Fashion Museum Bath is open every day from 10.30am, except 25 and 26 December.

ACCESSIBILITY

Wheelchair access

The building is accessible to wheelchair users. There is level access to the ground floor Assembly Rooms and a wheelchair is available for use. There is a lift from the ground floor to the Fashion Museum on the lower ground floor, and an emergency exit ramp. There is also an accessible toilet on the lower ground floor.

The nearest accessible car parking spaces to the Assembly Rooms are :

• 1 either side of Bennett Street where it joins Lansdown Road (approx 100/150m away)
• 1 on Alfred Street opposite the Assembly Rooms Pub (approx 80m)

Visitors with hearing impairments

Other accessible features include audioguides compatible with the "T" switch on hearing aids. Alternatively, a copy of the audioguide text (with reading torch) can be provided to read during your visit.

HOW TO REACH

By bus or coach
There are coach dropping-off points on Bennett Street at the front of the Assembly Rooms. National Express operates a regular bus service from London Victoria and also a direct service from Heathrow and Gatwick airports. The dropping-off point is at the bus station, twenty minutes walk from the Fashion Museum. See pedestrian map.

By Car
The quickest and most straightforward route if you are travelling from a distance is likely to be via the M5 and M4 approaching Bath from the north and using the Lansdown Park and Ride, marked Park and Ride North. By train
Bath is an excellent city to visit by rail. The station is called Bath Spa. There are frequent high-speed connections to London Paddington. For a slower service that is likely to be cheaper, try London Waterloo. The Fashion Museum is about twenty minutes walk from the station, see pedestrian map.

On foot
Bath is well suited to pedestrians. Most hotels and guest houses are within easy reach of the city centre. Follow the on-street maps, or print out a pedestrian map. The Fashion Museum is next to the Royal Crescent and Circus.

By bicycle
Bath is on the Sustrans National Cycle Route 4, which runs east-west through Bath, connecting Reading to Bristol. The immensely popular Bristol – Bath railway Path provides a tranquil walking and cycling path between the two cities. There is also good access from the south through the new Bath Two Tunnels Circuit, Route 244. There is helpful advice on the Sustrans website.
There is no direct cycle route from the north, and the A46 can be dangerous for cyclists, so it is worth planning a route that avoids this busy road.

By plane
Bath is accessible from Heathrow and Gatwick airports by public transport. The nearest airport is Bristol Airport, which serves the UK and a number of European routes. There are cars for hire and Bath is about 45 minutes drive away. There is an hourly direct bus link from Bristol Airport to Bath city centre.
