Commissioned in 1921 by the Jewish entrepreneur Abraham Icek Tuschinski, the theater was designed by Hijman Louis de Jong. The building combines different artistic styles: Amsterdam School, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, plus Asian influences. In 1940, when it was occupied by Germans, the name Tuschinski was removed from the façade and only German productions were shown in it.
