Pannonhalma Archabbey

The Benedictine Pannonhalma Archabbey, founded in 996, was destroyed in 1137 and rebuilt during the following centuries. In the 16th century, the religious complex, which became an archabbey in 1541, had to be fortified due to the Ottoman incursions.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, it was adorned with Baroque ornaments and extensions were added. Its current appearance was reached in 1832, with the construction of the library and the tower, built in classicist style. In 1950, the communism state confiscated the complex, which was returned to the Order at the end of the communism in Hungary. In 1995, it was reconstructed and renovated. A year later, coinciding with the millennium of the foundation, it was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. At present, a community of monks lives at the archabbey.
