The picture gallery has one of the world's most important collections of European painting from the 13th to the 18th century.
Paintings by Jan van Eyck, Pieter Bruegel, Albrecht Dürer, Raffael, Tizian, Caravaggio, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt and Jan Vermeer van Delft are exhibited here. Above all, German and Italian painting from the 13th to 16th centuries as well as Dutch painting from the 15th to 17th centuries can be admirably admired and studied here.
The paintings of the collection have been exhibited at the Kulturforum since 1998. The competition for the new building of the picture gallery, which was launched in 1986, was awarded to the architectural office Hilmer & Sattler the following year. In the style of Prussian austerity rises the simple building, whose rooms are grouped around a light lobby, above the rising Piazzetta. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunion of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in 1991, the gallery was expanded by a study gallery.
The simple façade design of the building is reminiscent of Karl Friedrich Schinkel's Old Museum . The collection rooms are also proportionally proportioned. From the large lobby, a place of calm and reflection, with a well installation by Walter De Maria, can always be returned to the exhibition rooms and the walk through the collection can be resumed.
