Kunstgewerbemuseum

The Kunstgewerbemuseum is the oldest of its kind in Germany. It houses world-famous testimonies of European craftsmanship and design, including ornate reliquaries of gold and precious stones, precious vases from glass or porcelain, fine embroidered dresses, detailed intarsed furniture, and classics of modern industrial design.

The permanent and special exhibitions of the Kunstgewerbemuseum can be admired in two places in Berlin: at the Kulturforum near Potsdamer Platz and in the picturesqueKöpenick Castle on a peninsula in the Dahme , where masterpieces of the art of space are displayed from the 16th to the 18th century.

The Haus am Kulturforum was created up to 1985 according to the designs of Rolf Gutbrod, one of the leading German architects of the 1960s. Characteristic of his architecture is the visibility of constructive elements. The museum is designed as a "built landscape" and with its greenery refers to the neighboring Tiergarten. While the building is closed to the outside, it welcomes the entrant with an open staircase and spacious exhibition rooms. The visitors are invited to devote themselves entirely to the showpieces of the collection and to walk from one level to another.

From 2012 to 2014, the building of the bakery has been largely redesigned by the architectural office Kuehn Malvezzi. Since its reopening on 22 November 2014, the Kunstgewerbemuseum am Kulturforum has again provided a systematic overview of the masterpieces of European design and object art from the Middle Ages to the present day. An extensive fashion gallery as well as the departments Design and Art Nouveau to Art Deco were newly established. Read more .
