Säynätsalo Town Hall

The businessman Enso Gutzeit organized in 1949 a contest to assign a project for the municipality.

The architect Alvar Aalto was the winner, with a multifunction building complex, which style is influenced by both Finnish vernacular architecture and the Italian Renaissance. The complex was finished in 1951 and it includes a library, bookstore, nursery, bank, private apartments, pharmacy, shops, the offices, the town hall and the council room. Since its opening, several of the multifunction spaces have been converted due to workspace needs. Nowadays, the Säynätsalo Town Hall is considered one of the most important buildings designed by the Finnish architect.
