Welcome to Crete, Greece's largest island where Europe's first civilization was born 4,000 years ago in the palaces of Knossos and Phaistos. From Heraklion's bustling markets to Chania's Venetian harbors, from the pink sands of Elafonissi to the dramatic depths of Samaria Gorge, this island offers endless discoveries. Navigate through 38 essential stops covering Minoan ruins, mountain villages, pristine beaches, and sacred caves where Zeus was born.
HOW TO REACH
By Air: Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ) airports receive direct flights from major European cities including Athens (45 minutes), London, Paris, Berlin, and Amsterdam. Heraklion handles more international traffic, while Chania serves western Crete. A third smaller airport in Sitia (JSH) serves eastern Crete with domestic connections.
By Ferry: Overnight ferries connect Piraeus (Athens) to Heraklion and Chania (8-9 hours), with cabins available. Faster catamarans operate in summer (5-6 hours). Ferries also connect Crete to Santorini (2 hours), Rhodes, and other Greek islands. Book ANEK or Minoan Lines for the most reliable service.
Getting Around: Renting a car is essential to explore Crete's diverse landscapes, remote beaches, and mountain villages. The island is large (260km long), and public buses (KTEL) only serve main routes between cities. Book cars early in summer as demand exceeds supply.
Alternative Transport: For specific regions, consider staying in one base (Chania for west, Heraklion for central, Agios Nikolaos for east) and taking day trips. Organized tours reach major sites like Knossos and Samaria Gorge. Taxis work for short distances but are expensive for touring.
