KZ-Gedenkstätte Neuengamme

The Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial is located on the historic site of the former Neuengamme concentration camp in the Bergedorf borough of Hamburg.

The Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial is located on the historic site of the former Neuengamme concentration camp in the Bergedorf borough of Hamburg.

At the end of 1938, the SS established a satellite camp of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in an abandoned brick factory in the Neuengamme suburb of Hamburg. In the early summer of 1940, Neuengamme became an independent camp, and it remained the main concentration camp in north-west Germany until 1945. During the war, the Gestapo (secret state police) and the SS security service sent tens of thousands of people from across occupied Europe to Neuengamme concentration camp. We must assume that more than half of the approximate 100,400 prisoners in the Neuengamme concentration camp did not survive Nazi persecution.

The main entrance is located directly next to the bus stop KZ‑Gedenkstätte Neuengamme, Ausstellung. At the main entrance is a service point, where visitors can find information about the memorial.

The history of the site is explained in five exhibitions, which are in four languages (German, English, French and Russian). The memorial also comprises a research archive, a library and the Centre for Historical Studies.

Visitors can also explore the grounds of the Concentration Camp Memorial outside the opening hours of the exhibitions with the help of information panels.
